Historic Speech Day Celebrations:
Educational Milestones for Students and School
Friday the 25th June 2010 was Speech Day for Sunny Lane School. But this was not an ordinary event. This date marked a new chapter in the school’s history, as from this date the school no longer exists. In September 2010 its doors will open with a new logo and a new name, The British Academy of Northern Cyprus.
The Speech Day Awards progra
mme was presented by well-known Genc TV presenter, Seniha Kanatli, and was filmed for a programme on Genc TV. Seniha had been asked to conduct proceedings on behalf of the Directors, Mark and Hayran Unwin. She began by welcoming parents, guests and visitors to what she described as ‘a momentous day, a turning point in the school’s history’ she also said ‘It is a day to celebrate the achievements of all the students.’
Parents and guests were then treated to a traditional dance by the school’s Folklore Dance group before the award ceremony began.
Seniha then went on say:
‘Today is about the development ofthe children, the skills they’ve learned and the enjoyment they have all taken from their days spent in the care of the school’s teachers. It is about the recognition of educational milestones, however great or small they may be and that these milestones are vital to their development to make them into rounded individuals.’
Students receiving awards were chosen by the teaching staff in recognition of the students work throughout the year. All staff was thanked for their dedication, care and motivating qualities that contribute to the students learning. Students then received their awards, with Laura Bailey, Year 11, being awarded The Most Outstanding Ambassador of the Year Premier Award. (For a full list of major awards, please see below).
With the award ceremony completed it was now time to turn the page on Sunny Lane and welcome the school’s new name and logo.
Students had been asked to design a new logo for The British Academy of Northern Cyprus. The Directors had a very tough job to decide the winner asthe standard of the work was so impressive, but behind closed doors the decision was made. The prize for best logo design (Dragon in Shield) was won by Robb
ie Pilcher (Year 9) and best logo (letters interlinked in Shield) by Jena Unwin (Year 9). Robbie and Jena now had an historic task in front of them; to unveil a banner to officially open The British Academy of Northern Cyprus and the new logos, which they did superbly. To mark this historic occasion a photo was taken of the whole school in front of the banner displaying the new school name and new logo.
